Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR)

What the PPSR is, why lenders register security interests on it, and what a search tells a borrower before settlement.

The Personal Property Securities Register, or PPSR, is the national register recording security interests held over personal property — everything from a general security agreement over a company to a specific interest in a piece of equipment or a vehicle. Lenders register their interest on the PPSR to secure priority over that asset ahead of other creditors, and a PPSR search is a routine step before settling asset finance, invoice finance or any facility secured by something other than real property. For a borrower, an existing registration a previous lender never removed is one of the more common settlement delays, since a new lender generally wants a clear position or a documented priority arrangement before advancing funds. Registration order on the PPSR, not the size of the debt, generally determines who is paid first if the asset is ever sold to recover a debt.
